PLI acquires hotel keycard division of LOC International

Asheville-based Plasticard-Locktech International has acquired the hotel keycard division of Canadian company LOC International. The acquisition further enhances its standing as the world’s largest manufacturer of hotel keycards and a leading specialty printer.

“This is an enormous and exciting development for our company,” said PLI Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Peter M. Krauss. “This deal brings several large contracts to our company including contracts with some of the biggest names in hospitality.”

“With 46 years of combined hospitality expertise, the joint efforts of the two groups bring an unparalleled level of experience and support to the hospitality industry.”

PLI has grown aggressively by pursuing new markets, such as casino hotels and cruise lines; expanding existing relationships with customers in the gift and loyalty market; and securing a substantial number of international clients. The latter led to PLI opening its Netherlands facility in 2010.

“Acquiring LOC’s keycard division is another step in PLI expanding its international business as well,” said Krauss. “Clients all over the world have come to rely on us for quality products at manufacturer-direct prices with a quick turnaround, regardless of where they’re located. This new development will provide us with the opportunity to grow our business both in the States and abroad at an even faster pace.”

As part of the acquisition of LOC’s keycard division, Richard Tanguay, founder and president of LOC International, will join PLI as Executive Vice President of Hospitality. Richard brings 20-plus years of hospitality experience to the PLI management team. PLI Hospitality provides hotels and resorts with a variety of specialty printed products for marketing and operations. Tanguay, along with his sales team, will continue to work out of Quebec, Canada in PLI’s new Canadian sales office. This sales team will be focused primarily on supporting Canadian customers while helping to maintain existing national and international contracts.

“I am very excited to be part of the PLI team”, said Richard Tanguay, President of LOC International. “PLI’s production capabilities and customer support teams will allow us to provide an even higher level of support to our existing clients while allowing us the ability to further expand the combined business.”

LOC International will continue to operate out of its existing offices in Canada, selling in-room safes, electronic door locks and mini-bars and other hotel related items.

PLI employees raise $3,250 for area charities

Also collect food for Manna Food Bank

Asheville-based Plasticard-Locktech International has wrapped up its annual holiday fundraising drive, collecting $3,250 to provide Christmas gifts for needy families in Western North Carolina.

“PLI has always placed a focus on giving back to the community that has supported us,” said Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Peter M. Krauss. “Our employees consistently look forward to our holiday fundraising activities, with participation increasing year after year. This year, we raised 50 percent more than in 2010.”

Employees held various fundraising activities from August through November, including a bake sale and chili cook-off, with staff contributing, preparing and selling the food. Bruegger’s Bagels, Domino’s Pizza, Neo Burrito and The Olive Garden donated meals that were sold to employees at a reduced cost. Biltmore Estate, Fine Arts Theatre, The Grey Eagle, Luella’s Bar-B-Que, Marco’s Pizzeria, The Spa at The Grove Park Inn Resort and Wildwater Adventures provided items for raffles that also included extra paid time off. And the Eddie’s Mobile Dog House food truck donated a portion of proceeds from one day at PLI to the cause.

PLI becomes only third major plastics printer to receive FSC certification

Asheville-based Plasticard-Locktech International (PLI), the world’s largest manufacturer of hotel keycards and a specialty printer of plastic and paper products, announced today that the company has earned Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®) Chain-of-Custody certification from the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program. This makes PLI one of only three major plastics printers worldwide to offer paper products that carry the FSC seal.

“Receiving FSC certification shows that PLI is committed to the highest environmental standards,” said Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Peter M. Krauss. “It also gives our customers an edge by allowing them to weave their environmental initiatives into the printed materials used for operations, marketing and more.”

As a result of this certification, PLI products printed on certified paper stock – including an option that’s both recyclable and biodegradable – can carry the FSC and Rainforest Alliance (RA) labels. This guarantees customers that the products they are buying are the result of practices balancing ecological, economic, and social considerations throughout every part of the supply chain, from the forest to the finished product.

Receiving FSC certification required PLI to develop a new batch of processes and procedures. For example, raw materials that will be used for FSC-labeled finished goods must be quarantined from non-FSC materials, and each live job must be clearly labeled as FSC every step of the way to ensure the integrity of the FSC label.

“Earning this certification was no small undertaking, but it shows that the entire PLI team – from upper management through sales to production and quality control – is dedicated to the FSC and Rainforest Alliance mission,” said Krauss.

PLI’s FSC certification is the latest chapter in its long history of environmental consciousness. The company’s commitment to the environment goes well beyond the materials it uses and touches every aspect of operation. The company’s printing process uses low-VOC chemicals. Plate making is chemical-free and the presses are alcohol-free, utilizing a closed, water-based system. Inks used are inert UV inks. 100% of paper, plastic and aluminum manufacturing waste is recycled, as is all office waste.

In 2008, PLI was the recipient of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce’s first Go Green Award for an extensive “greening” of its facility, which included coating the 64,000 square-foot galvanized roof with a protective product that conserves energy by reflecting the sun, and switching warehouse lighting to energy-efficient T5 and T8 fluorescents with motion detectors, which use 80% less power than conventional lights.

“Our FSC and Rainforest Alliance certification ushers in an exciting new era for PLI,” said Krauss. “As we continue in our third decade of serving clients, we have a new opportunity to present them with products that are not only on the cutting edge of design and technology, but on the cutting edge of environmental sustainability as well.”

PLI keycards take top honors at ICMA awards

PLI (Plasticard-Locktech International), the world’s largest keycard manufacturer and a printer of specialty plastic and paper products, took home two awards – including top honors – in the Best Access Control & ID Cards category at the recent Élan Awards. Presented by the International Card Manufacturers Association, these awards honor card manufacturers and vendors for world-class achievements in card design and technological innovation.

PLI received the category’s top award for keycards it manufactured for February’s Super Bowl XLV. The company has manufactured the official hotel keycards for the Super Bowl each year since 2003, and for this year’s cards, PLI perfected a screen-printing process that gave the football in two of the five designs a raised texture similar to the pebbling on a real football. The keycards were the first live job to be produced on PLI’s new screen press, and more than 30,000 cards were manufactured for use at more than 45 hotels in northern Texas throughout Super Bowl weekend.

Another series of PLI cards manufactured for Westin Hotels & Resorts was one of only two finalists in the same category. These eight cards featured x-rays of natural objects including leaves, dandelions and conch shells. The x-rays were colorized by an artist, resulting in designs that appear abstract at first but on closer inspection are obviously taken directly from nature. The cards, which PLI designed in partnership with the brand managers and designers at Starwood Hotels, were printed on 43 percent recycled PVC, with the design and construction complementing Westin’s strong environmental initiative. PLI produced 383,000 pieces in the initial run of these cards, which are in use at Westin hotels worldwide.

“Receiving an ICMA award is a tremendous honor, as these awards are presented by our industry peers,” said Peter M. Krauss, chief sales and marketing officer for PLI. “They’re a testament to PLI’s standing in the specialty printing industry and to our commitment to continuously pushing the envelope in the areas of technology and design.”

The Élan Awards were announced May 3, 2011 as part of ICMA’s Card Manufacturing and Personalization EXPO Hollywood, Fla.

PLI announces new recyclable, biodegradable fiberboard

PLI (Plasticard-Locktech International), the world’s largest keycard manufacturer and a printer of specialty plastic and paper products, has added a recyclable and biodegradable fiberboard to its product lineup, providing a cost-effective way for customers to make a variety of printed products more environmentally friendly.

The new PLI MacEco Card30 material consists of 30 percent post-consumer recycled fiber. The balance is wood fiber from a well managed, FSC-certified forest, with two trees planted for each one harvested. The material is manufactured using aqueous technology and water-based coating, and no ozone-depleting chemicals or chlorinated raw materials are used.

PLI MacEco Card30 can be used for products up to 24” by 30”, including hotel keycards, gift cards, game cards, door hangers, conference schedules, parking passes, ID badges, posters and more. The unlaminated fiberboard is fully biodegradable, although adding magnetic stripes or specialty finishes may reduce the biodegradability of the product.

The addition of this substrate is the latest move in PLI’s ongoing mission to make every aspect of its operation as environmentally responsible as possible. The company also offers products made of PVC consisting of 43% recycled material, having found this blend of recycled and virgin PVC to provide the best balance of quality and whiteness. PLI is committed to converting to 100% recycled PVC as soon as this resource becomes available.

Additional greening efforts by PLI include using low-VOC, alcohol-free chemicals and inert UV inks on all presses; using a chemical-free plate-making system; recycling 100% of paper, plastic and aluminum manufacturing waste; and several energy-saving enhancements to its 64,000 square-foot headquarters in Asheville, NC.

PLI produces Super Bowl keycards for 9th year running

New screen-printing technique adds texture to cards

For the 9th consecutive year, the NFL has chosen Asheville-based Plasticard-Locktech International (PLI) to manufacture the official hotel keycards for the Super Bowl, and this year the cards are getting a new feel – literally.

PLI recently produced more than 30,000 key cards that will be used at more than 45 hotels in northern Texas throughout Super Bowl weekend, which will culminate in the big game on Sunday, February 6. For this year’s cards, the company perfected a screen-printing technique that gives the football in the design a raised texture similar to the pebbling on a real football.

“One of the things we appreciate about our longstanding relationship with the NFL is that it’s an organization that’s always looking to try new and exciting things, much like PLI,” said PLI President and CEO Mark Goldberg. “When they approached us about adding a texture to this year’s cards, we saw it not as a challenge, but as an opportunity for our product development team to help the client produce a distinctive product with a definite ‘wow’ factor.”

There are five designs for this year’s cards – two designs for the host hotel for Super Bowl operations staff, one design each for the AFC and NFC host hotels, and another design for hotels where fans, media and other attendees are staying. The NFL is once again partnering with Motorola to sponsor the cards, and this year Visa is sponsoring keycard envelopes, which are also being produced by PLI. Past cards have become collectors’ items, often popping up on online auction sites, and the tactile finish is expected to make this year’s cards some of the most sought-after.

In addition to the Super Bowl keycards, PLI produces tens of thousands of cards per season for the majority of the individual NFL teams; most major college football bowl games, including the BCS National Championship and the NCAA Final Four; and other sports leagues such as the NBA, Major League Baseball, NASCAR and more.
