PLI has a long history of environmental consciousness, with our greening efforts touching every aspect of our operation, from our catalog to production to our facility.
In August 2011, we became only the third plastics printer to earn Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®) Chain-of-Custody certification from the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program. As a result, products printed on certified paper stock – including an option that’s both recyclable and biodegradable – can carry the FSC and Rainforest Alliance labels. This guarantees customers that the products they are buying are the result of practices balancing ecological, economic, and social considerations throughout every part of the supply chain, from the forest to the finished product.
For recycled keycards, recycled gift cards and other printed plastics, we offer PVC made from 43% post-consumer material. We find this to be both environmentally responsible – even more than bio-PVC and other supposedly Earth-friendly products – and clean white, meaning artwork isn’t affected. We will offer 100% recycled cards once that material is available.
Additional PLI greening initiatives include:
- Using low-VOC, alcohol-free chemicals and inert UV inks on all presses, which also utilize a closed, water-based system
- Using a chemical-free plate-making system
- Recycling 100% of paper, plastic and aluminum manufacturing waste
- Replacing 85% of all cleaning chemicals with greener alternatives
- Coating our 64,000 square-foot galvanized roof with a protective product that conserves energy by reflecting the sun, which has reduced building cooling costs by up to 30%
- Switching all warehouse lighting from wasteful traditional spot hi-bay lighting to energy-efficient T5 and T8 fluorescents with motion detectors, which use 80% less power than conventional lights and generate a more even light spread
As a result of these efforts, we received the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce’s first Go Green Award in 2008.
