History

PLI (Plasticard-Locktech International) was founded in 1988 by a retiree telemarketing hotel keycards from his basement office in Asheville, NC. From that beginning, PLI has grown to become the world's largest hotel keycard manufacturer and a leading specialty printer of plastic and paper products.

In the mid-1990s, PLI’s founders began manufacturing their own keycards out of a desire to provide greater quality control and quicker turnaround times for customers. In 1996, the company moved to a facility on Pond Road in Asheville. Seven years later, PLI had outgrown that space and, as part of a $4 million capital expansion, moved to a 54,000 square-foot facility. In 2008, another $3 million capital expansion added 10,000 square feet to PLI’s headquarters, further expanding its sales, customer service and production areas.

Today, PLI works with clients around the world, including most major hotel chains as well as retailers, restaurants, attractions, fun centers, sports commissions and event planners. In addition to hotel keycards, our catalog includes gift cards, loyalty cards, membership cards, POS cards, card envelopes, card carriers, key fobs, card/fob combos, ID badges, TV channel guides, table tents, door hangers, static clings, magnets, posters, banners, display graphics, and much more.

In 2010, PLI opened a global distribution center and warehouse in The Netherlands, and one is being established in Hong Kong as well.

PLI has been ranked in the Inc. 5000 list of the nation’s fastest-growing privately held companies on several occasions, and the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce has recognized PLI for 12 consecutive years of outstanding growth and achievement. In 2008, PLI was the recipient of the Chamber’s first Go Green Award for its efforts in protecting the environment and introducing a number of green initiatives to its already earth-conscious culture.
